My take on the George Tiller murder and Wiley Drake’s comment

Here’s my take on the George Tiller murder and Wiley Drake’s comment:

Dr. Tiller was an evil, evil man.  I’m thinking that right now, he’s most likely in hell.  However, I do not gloat about, or rejoice in, his death.  Anyone who does so just doesn’t get it.  Yes, he sowed death and he reaped death, but that is not a cause for celebration.

What Tiller’s murderer did was inexcusable.  Yes, I do believe that the unborn are fully human, and therefore abortion is murder.   However, we are not a nation of vigilantes, but a nation of laws.  Romans 12:19 says: “Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”  I think that makes it clear that from the Christian perspective that vigilante justice (especially the fatal kind) has no place in the Christian life.  (By the way, this is a completely separate concept from governments enforcing laws and punishing criminals.  That is Scripturally justified.)

Also consider Ezekiel 18:23. “‘Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked?’ declares the Sovereign LORD. ‘Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?’”  Ezekiel 18:32 and 33:11 also echo this theme.  God did not rejoice when Dr. George Tiller died.  Why, then, should any of us?  I understand where Wiley Drake is coming from when he rejoices in Tiller’s death, but I must strongly disagree with his sentiment.  Yes, it is a natural reaction, but in light of Scripture, it is not an appropriate one.
